People can have sleep disorders for a lot of different reasons ranging from nightmares to neurological disorders. Having continuous issues with sleep begins to be a major problem because it can interfere with a person's daily life and have a huge effect on their mental and physical health. There are actually several different distinctions of these disorders, including parasomnias, dysomnias and more depending on the symptoms that the person is displaying.

It is important to determine the underlying cause of the disorders, as this is what the treatment becomes centered around. However, things as simple as a regular diet and exercise can be quite helpful with the symptoms of these disorders. It can also help to relax the body with things like yoga and meditation. Relaxation helps because stress and anxiety are known causes for these disorders.

There are many different types of sleep disorders. One of them is called sleep apnea. This is when a person's breathing gets interrupted while they are asleep. This can actually be a life threatening disorder for some people. When someone has sleep apnea, they may experience a 10-20 second pause in their breathing, and this can happen up to 30 times in just one hour. The three kinds of sleep apnea are called central, obstructive and mixed.

Many times sleep apnea occurs due to an obstructed windpipe or some sort of mechanical problem in the windpipe. However, the person could also have a neurological disorder that involves their nerve cells. Sometimes as people get older their muscle tone begins to relax, and this may be the cause for their windpipe collapsing. This is when they would be considered to have obstructive sleep apnea. This is marked by very loud snoring along with obstructed air flow through the person's windpipe. This can sometimes last between 10-60 seconds. Sometimes the person seems like they are either gasping or snorting. Another disorder that involves sleep is called narcolepsy. This is when it becomes nearly impossible for a person to stay awake.

When a person has narcolepsy they may randomly fall asleep in the middle of doing something. This can be very dangerous, not only for the person who has the disorder but for the people around them. Those who have this disorder will even get sudden attacks of falling asleep even when they have had a full night of sleep the previous night. This could even happen when they are driving or walking. If a person has a habit of skipping meals throughout the day this could cause insomnia. This is because according to the latest research, skipping meals will cause people to have what is called night eating syndrome.

A person who has this problem will wake up in the middle of the night and eat without having any realization they are doing it. This is just like sleepwalking, only there is eating involved. Sleep disorders can be very serious, and if you think you may have one it is absolutely necessary to seek treatment so that you can protect your safety and live the life that you deserve.
