One of the most common causes of sleep apnea is severe obesity. It is also quite ironic that even though being obese can cause people to have these symptoms, the actual condition itself can be a cause for weight gain. Either way, weight gain is not a good situation in any sense. This is why one of the first things that doctors recommend to treat this disorder is a weight loss program.

There is also another common treatment that doctors use, which is called a sleep apnea machine. This is most commonly used during the process of weight loss. There is a significantly higher percentage of this disorder occurring in obese or overweight people.

One reason for this is because of the fact that obese people have thicker necks. This makes them more susceptible to the obstructive form of the disorder because of the fact that the excess tissue in their neck and nasal passages may constrict. This ends up blocking up the person's airways, which then causes the symptom of the disorder. People who have a smaller jaw or high blood pressure are also at a higher risk.

There are other common issues linked with this disorder. People who have this disorder tend to have a hard time focusing throughout the day due to the fact that they have not had a decent amount of sleep the night before. This disorder can even cause those who suffer from it to have problems with impotency and a lowered sex drive, as well as being moody and very irritable.

After going through the night dealing with their symptoms, many people will wake up wondering why they have dry mouth. Another common problem is that people with this disorder will experience night sweats on a regular basis. It is also very common for sufferers to wake up in the morning to a very severe headache, as well as heartburn. There will most likely be extra weight gain, as well as major personality changes and even some memory lapses. Additionally, people with this disorder will generally be sleep deprived, meaning that they will be significantly less intelligent than they normally would be. Plus, they will nearly always wake up groggy.

This condition can be very destructive to a person's life, and worst of all it can even be fatal. If it is left untreated, the person has an increased risk of suffering from a heart attack or a stroke. When the condition is severe, and nothing is done about it, the condition can get significantly worse and may possibly lead to the person's death or permanent disability. For this very important reason, it is absolutely vital that if you at all suspect that someone you know or love may have this disorder, it will be essential for them to meet with a physician who can accurately diagnose the disorder and set up a plan for treatment. Keep in mind that sleep apnea can be successfully treated by a physician, so do not delay medical attention.
