A virtual private server does have a few similarities to shared hosting in a sense that one main server is shared by multiple users. There are significant differences though, as each user is allowed to have their own isolated environment and reserved resources. Each user is then allowed a certain amount of the resources, and they cannot be used by anyone else on the server. This even applies to resources that are not being used, as they will still be reserved for their intended user.

A lot of webmasters are unsatisfied with their shared hosting so they are looking for something to switch to. Most businesses will outgrow shared hosting at some point, but at the same time they may not be ready for a dedicated server or may not be able to afford one. That is when it becomes beneficial to have an option in the middle. A virtual private server offers many of the same benefits as a dedicated server but you do not have to pay nearly as much. Many online business owners will choose shared hosting in the beginning since it doesn't cost very much. However, once there is significant traffic flowing through the site it becomes evident that shared hosting is not going to be enough. This is why any business that has growth potential would be better off with a VPS package.

VPS solutions do cost more than shared servers, but the growth potential that they have to offer is well worth the cost. Also keep in mind that there can be significant issues with downtime when it comes to shared hosting. If the server is ever down, no one will be able to access your site. This can cause you to lose a substantial amount of business. With this in mind, you will actually be able to save money with a VPS option due to the fact that your business will not be losing any money from issues with downtime. Besides, the demand for these hosting options has grown, and this has brought down the price to the point where most online businesses with decent traffic can afford to go with VPS.

With this type of server you will be presented with the choice between a managed or unmanaged server. With a managed server, a lot of things will be taken care of for you, such as configuration changes and installs. However, if you decide upon an unmanaged server, you will be the one who is responsible for these things. At this point you would end up needing to have some tech knowledge in order to be able to keep up the maintenance and perform the required installations. If you are someone who has little prior experience with VPS, you would probably be better off choosing the managed server.

There are many significant advantages for online businesses when they decide to go with a virtual private server, and with the reliability and performance offered by this option you are sure to be satisfied if you choose it.
