Most people may have heard of the saying, everything that could go wrong went wrong. Such is life and there are occasions where this will happen. Disaster recovery, redundancy and other such preparations are done so as to minimize loss when caught in such situations. This should not be regarded as a negative thought but rather an admission of the fact that all man made things are imperfect. It is also an appreciation of the fact that nature holds immense power that is well beyond anything we can ever hope to achieve. Incase various probable scenarios arises, there are disaster experts who are expertise on how to deal with them. The only common item in all these situations is the fact that preparation will greatly reduce damages and loss. When it comes to computing there are a large number of manmade as well as natural disasters that could come into play. Predicting what the worst possible disaster for a computing system could be is a very daunting task. It can be assumed that any event that completely cuts off computing either because of power outage, lack of access to resources, destruction of equipment or such situations is the worst possible scenario. Smaller networks and the internet as well as other larger networks are linked by an IP transit provider. Networks exchange data through gateways of all sorts. Gateways are crucial because they aid in the process of connecting office and home networks to the internet. A partial ip transit could end up facing massive losses in cases of natural disasters because not much can be done to save the situation. Human interference of the operations of the IP transit providers is on the other hand a much easier issue to deal with. For a company engaged in the provision of IP transit, the worst thing that can happen is complete outage. Should this situation arise, and then most internet users will find themselves in trouble. Gateway malfunction will lead to breakdown between various networks and the internet which means serious trouble for everyone. For enterprises that depend on internet to do business will have no clients or communication. Online sale for products will no longer be available and this will greatly slow down trade. The malfunctioning of important IP transit providers is a case that could lead to complete confusion. Communication Is next to impossible without all this central component of computing. What a company faces here can as well be regarded to be a catastrophe. Losses come in many forms such as lost business, communication costs and much more. When a business has no gateway between smaller networks and the IP transit providers it would mean stagnation for the business. Such a situation should therefore be avoided at all costs and measures put in place to provide redundancy as well as support in the unfortunate event it actually happens.
