Learning how to play a guitar can range from the easy things like strumming chords to more complicated techniques. It can be very useful to know how to play, as this is an instrument that reaches across many different genres of music. Depending on your personal preference, you may choose to get private lessons from an instructor, or you may even decide to teach yourself online. No one method is better than the other, as it really just depends on the person and their individual needs as a guitar player.

A lot of people like to learn how to play a guitar so that they can play a little bit of backup in a band. If this is the case, all you really have to do is master about 5-6 chords and you can start to spend some time playing along with an established band.

There are also people who are more dedicated to learning a specific style of guitar playing. This is when you will need to spend a significant amount of time working on mastering the various techniques for the style you wish to play.

In the end, finding a balance between both of these methods is usually what works best for people. Just begin experimenting, and you will soon figure out what kind of guitar player you are. Just make sure that when you are first starting out you don't bite off more than you can chew, meaning take it slow and learn things in little sections. Especially if you are trying to learn a specific song that is slightly difficult for you, it may be necessary to break it up into small parts and learn each section at a time before you try to play the whole thing. If you try to master a difficult song all in one sitting you will most likely grow tired and give up. Try to start with some easier songs and then work your way into the more difficult ones.

Once you have been able to master a piece that you are proud of, be sure to share it with people. Playing in front of others helps you to overcome your nerves. It won't be easy at first, but once you manage to do it you will be very proud of yourself.

No matter what genre of music you like to play, it will be necessary for you to effectively train your ear. You will find that this matters even more than being able to read music. Just listen carefully to some of your favorite music, and really start paying attention to the sounds to train your listening ability. Just start out with the most simple of songs and then move on to the more complicated ones. Whatever you do, just keep practicing, as this is the only way to get better.

Just make sure that throughout the process of learning how to play a guitar you remember to keep having fun and enjoying yourself, because that is really what it's all about!
