There are some things about learning how to play a guitar that are simpler than others. There are the basics like strumming, and then there are some complicated aspects to it as well. Once you know how to play this instrument you have a lot of opportunity to play, as there are many genres of music that use the guitar. The way you go about learning guitar is really just a matter of preference, as everyone is different and has a unique learning process. You could go and get lessons privately from a guitar teacher, or you may use some of the online avenues and learn on your own. There is not one method that is superior to the other, so you can just base your decision on what you feel the most comfortable with.

If you are interested in mastering a certain style of guitar, you can set your focus on learning the many different techniques for that style. You may just want to join your friends and play a little backup guitar. In this case all you should really be required to know is about 5-6 chords, and then you could enjoy some time doing backup in a band.

The best way to go about it is to look for a happy balance between these two things. Once you start messing around with the guitar and experimenting with chords it will become evident what type of guitar player you are going to be. Just remember to take things one step at a time. Break things up into little sections to learn. It will just be too much for you in the beginning to sit down and learn an entire song in one sitting. Start out with something simple and master it before moving on to the next one.

Soon you will be ready to share your new talent with others. The only way that you are ever come to overcome your fears about playing for others is to face that fear head on. At first it will be very uncomfortable, but once you get past this initial fear and just get on with it you will be very proud of yourself!

No matter what genre of music you like to play on the guitar, you are going to need to get your ear trained for the music. You will need to know this even more than you will need to know how to read music. Just take a song that you really like and start listening to it all the time. Pay close attention to all of the sounds and focus on the guitar. When you first start, use simple songs and then move on to more detailed pieces later. Continuously practicing is the most important thing, as this is your only way to improve.

When things start to get really difficult, try to remember what made you want to start playing in the first place. You will find learning how to play a guitar to be very satisfying, and it is also one of the most fun things you could ever do!
