The reason why most people decide to start out using shared hosting is because it is very cost effective. Generally it will cost less than $10 per month. You are provided with some of the most basic tools, and if something doesn't work the way it should you have the option of calling customer service. As long as your website is very basic and mainly just works as a brochure for your company you will be satisfied with shared hosting. However, once you begin to drive traffic to your business you may begin to run into some trouble. If you have started a website for the purpose of selling a product line or niche marketing, you will probably end up completely frustrated with shared hosting. It used to be that the only other option was to begin using a dedicated server. When you use this option you get your own hardware and it is hosted by you as an ISP. The thing about dedicated servers is that they come at a very high cost and you will not have the option of utilizing customer support. It is not likely that you will be able to install applications and software or regularly maintain it without hiring technical support to help you. In many cases, this is too big of a step for business owners. Even if you have the funds to afford the hardware, it is going to be very expensive to hire technical help. This is why VPS hosting is a good option. It provides a happy medium between the other two options. With a virtual private server you can have specific server resources reserved for only you. Even if you aren't using the resources they still belong to you. Basically, the server has many partitions, and each one belongs to a separate user. Even though this is not a totally dedicated server, it functions like one. There are some companies that will offer you managed options for your virtual private server. This is when they install the necessary tools and software for you so that you can focus on running your business. There are other companies who will simply provide you with the most basic setup and then you will be responsible for hiring someone to take care of the rest. This is why you will see such a variation in price when it comes to companies who offer this sort of hosting. You would likely benefit greatly from using a virtual private server if you are the kind of business that doesn't already have a technical staff or the extra finances to afford a dedicated server. If you don't want to have to deal with hiring support, then the best option for you is probably going to be managed VPS hosting, as this option will provide you with everything that you need.
