Let's say that you are hosting from your home and you are concerned about how much speed you will need, don't worry this guide will tell you. You will need some theoretical knowledge of hosting before you continue. This guide will even discuss issues regarding formation of your own ISP (Internet Service Provider). The very basic thing to know is that the computers you are giving internet service to are isolated till you begin hosting. Interactions like downloading, uploading, browsing, chatting etc inside a network are called network traffic. All network traffic remain within the LAN (Local Area Network) before you start hosting. The primary act of an ISP is to make a bridge(metaphorically speaking) for the network traffic so that it can travel from LAN to WAN (Wide Area Network). This act is known as IP transit. Internet transit and IP transit are in fact the same thing. Since IP transit is all about transporting network traffic, an ISP's is also an IP transit Provider. No matter what you do when running a server from your home to avoid bandwidth prices, you can never eliminate the security threat completely. Of course you can take some actions to minimize the security threats. The first thing to do is keep your OS updated. Now let's talk about bandwidth. The amount of data that can be sent or received via wire or wireless method in a fixed amount of time is considered as bandwidth. Bandwidth is measured by bps (bits per second). If you need a measurement, 256 bps is half the speed of 512 bps. So in a nutshell bandwidth is the amount of information that can pass through your wire or wireless links. If you don't have sufficient bandwidth the network traffic will become slow.As an IP transit provider it's your job to secure enough bandwidth. The communication links between an ISP's network and the WAN have separate bandwidths. A bottleneck will start if suddenly one of the links bandwidth significantly drops. A bottleneck will cause the whole network to behave slower. The delays caused by this will make webpage's slower to load. You must know that the lowest bandwidth of your network is what you should always consider. To know more about your networks performance you should diagnose your network frequently. In case you are only hosting your own website from home you do not need a lot of bandwidth.Your primary concern should be your upload speed. The reason for this is, when hosting you are sending information to all users who are requesting it. The need of your upload speed depends on the popularity of your website. A simple math is necessary to calculate how much speed one user will request.Find out the total amount of data of your website contained in all files. The files may include style sheets, flash files etc. Next convert the data type into bits. The amount you now have in bits is the amount you need to upload per second to a single user. Now multiply this number by the amount of users that will visit your site. This amount is also known as latency. It is better to go for additional speed as it will always benefit you.
