The first thing that you are going to need to do is get an estimate, and there is never an instance in which you should be charged for this. The estimate should always be free, regardless of the type of job they would be doing for you. You also want to make sure that you get a written copy of the estimate, that way you can't be hit with any additional charges at any point in the future. Remember that the main reason you want an estimate in the first place is because you are trying to get an idea of the very most you would be paying to get the job completed. You should be able to get a breakdown of the estimated price from any contractor out there. Some of the painting contractors just automatically do this, but others will have to be specifically asked to do it. If you have gotten an estimate from a contractor that has not broken it down for you, be sure to request that they do. You need to know what is going to be included in the price that they have quoted you. For instance, you want to know ahead of time if they are going to take care of the preparation for you by taping up your windows and moving your furniture. If there will be multiple workers required to complete the job, make sure that you will not be getting different workers every day. It will be difficult to have a cohesive project when there are different people working on it day by day. The contractor should be willing to extend you a warranty on their work in addition to the paint used. It won't matter what quality of paint you get if the workmanship is terrible. This is precisely why you need to have a warranty on the work. You would only be taking a risk with your home and your money if you decide to hire someone anyway after they have refused to give you a warranty. The whole cleanup process should be included in the price if you are paying them a decent amount of money. When you are making sure to pay your contractor a healthy sum of money, there should be no question as to whether or not they will finish out the project by completing the cleanup process. You also need a firm time estimate from the contractor regarding when they would be able to have the project completed. Experienced contractors should be able to determine the length of a project. In general, an open space like a living room can be completed much faster than an area that is restricted by things like a toilet or a sink. Also, be sure that you pay by the job, never by the hour.
