A Metro Ethernet Network or MAN is a large wired computer network that usually covers a city or metropolitan area. It employs Carrier Ethernet technology which is the same protocol used in most LAN and WAN networks. Some alteration has been adapted here so that the technology continues to be useful over the large area that is covered by the Metro Ethernet. This network is usually used to interconnect smaller networks within the same city as well as connect to the internet. Businesses and institutions that have branches or remote offices are able to connect their offices through this network. This network helps in minimizing the cost of communication and makes it possible to share computing resources over longer distances. The key reason as to why most ISPs employ Metro Ethernet technology in their operations is due to the high performance it offers. Just like any other business, when ISP goes into business it is most likely to start off on a low key while hoping for growth in the future. So as to effectively serve their clientele, an ISP rolls out their service through a Metro Ethernet. The increase in the number of clients should not cause a compromise in the quality of service an ISP delivers to its clients. The market has Metro Ethernet service providers who are contentedly serving more than 1.5 million clients in a single city. This proves the massive capacity the technology provides. All ISP clients have performance at the top of their priorities and any provider who is using a Metro Ethernet service is sure to get a lot of clients coming in.

The fact that Metro Ethernet technology is similar to most LAN, WAN and home networks is a contributing factor to its popularity among ISPs. Majority of these smaller networks use the same protocol deployed in Metro Ethernets. This makes it completely compatible with most computing networks and as such will not require any special equipment or configuration. There is no signal conversion involved here and the communication is seamless and efficient. With compatibility, a client is assured of easier access to hardware, technical support and other requirements. This makes it pocket friendly for the Metro Ethernet provider and client as they will both be working with standard equipment which is readily available.

The benefits that come along with these have seen ISPs continue to use a Metro Ethernet network in their operations. These include the higher security offered through the service as it offers less opportunity for interception of communications.

There is ease of capacity upgrades for clients through Metro Ethernet as the capacity is already available. Most of the networks available lately are capable of delivering up to 10GBps. In an instance where a client might need a higher performance on such a network, might be required to do a few adjustments to their device and configurations. ISPs will continue using Metro Ethernets as they are the most efficient way to deliver services to their customers.
