You have made the decision to paint your home, but before you go about looking for a house painter there are some key points you need to get clear on in order to get the best estimates possible. You will need to know which areas you want painted, the colors you want and what kind of paint you would like to use. There are paint charts that you can get from your local paint stores that will be very helpful in this process.

You could also get some suggestions from the painter that you end up hiring, but you will want to have some ideas before you get going. Are you going to need any drywall repairs or removal of wallpaper? You should also be aware of the square footage of your home so that you can give the painter some idea of how big your home is.

You will find that hiring a painter is going to be exactly like hiring any other kind of contractor. You need to ask certain questions and look for certain things. You wouldn't want to end up in one of those horrible situations where you put down a large deposit, only to have the painters begin the job and then suddenly leave it unfinished.

One of the first things that people notice about your home is the paint, whether it is the inside or the outside, so you do not want to take any chances with it. You may want to ask around for some references if you can. You could also try to get referrals from your local Chamber of Commerce.

Get in touch with more than one house painter and ask them to come to your home for an inspection and give you an estimate as to how much they would charge to do the job. Be sure that each painter is giving you an estimate on the same specific qualifications, like which areas will be painted, preparation, how many coats will be applied, moving your furniture and cleaning up afterward. If everyone is on the same page with their estimates you will have an easier time comparing them.

Make sure that you get every estimate in writing, including itemization for what you will pay for labor and materials as well as terms of payment, start date, finish date and any sort of specifications regarding the paint that is to be used for the job.

Get references from each contractor and be sure to contact them all. Ask questions that are very specific to the job performance of the contractor in question. This includes their timeliness, the quality of their work; if there have been any problems with the work since its completion and whether or not they would hire this contractor in the future. When in doubt, you can always contact your local Better Business Bureau to see if there has been any sort of complaints regarding the house painter that you are considering hiring to paint your home.
