With a virtual private server (VPS) there is shared hosting in a sense that multiple users will be using one main server. However, each user gets their own partitioned environment and dedicated resources. The resources get allocated evenly, and then each user gets a reserved amount. The allocated resources belong to the user no matter what, even if they are not using them at the time.

There are a lot of business owners that are unhappy with using a shared server and are looking for an alternative. There comes a point when a business has outgrown shared hosting, but it may not be ready or have the need for a full dedicated server. Having the middle option of a virtual private server is convenient because it offers many of the same benefits as a dedicated server, only it costs significantly less. There are a lot of webmasters that started their sites using shared hosting because it is so cost effective, and then they began driving traffic to their site and realized that shard hosting is not a good option for sites that get decent traffic. If you are a business owner that has plans to grow your company or business, you will most likely want to go with VPS hosting in order to accommodate your online needs.

Even though you will have to pay more for VPS hosting than you would for shared hosting, you will still save money in a sense that your business can have growth potential without having to pay the high cost for a dedicated server. Additionally, you will not experience all of the down time that you can sometimes get with unreliable shared hosting. When the server is down and your site cannot be accessed, you are losing out on potential profits. In this regard, you can actually save with VPS hosting because you won't be losing profits due to the unreliability of your shared hosting. You will also notice that ever since the demand for this type of hosting began to get higher, the cost has gone down significantly to the point where more people can afford it.

When you decide to use this type of server, you will be able to choose between the option of having a managed server or an unmanaged one. You can have installs and configuration changes taken care of by the vendor if you go with a managed server. All of this will be your responsibility of you decide to go with an unmanaged server. This is when it would be required of you to have some technical skill in order to do the required installations and maintenance. If you are relatively inexperienced when it comes to VPS hosting, it would probably be a good idea to go with the managed option. The cost difference isn't too much, and you will save so much time and hassle.

There are a lot of reasons why a business would benefit from making the switch to a virtual private server, and you will enjoy the convenience and reliability that this option has to offer.
