Looking for in home care in Atlanta is not an easy task. You know others must have gone down the same road but it is like reinventing the wheel and you have to seek the answers yourself anew. I know what you are going through - my brothers and I had to go through this same process a few years ago with our dad. Atlanta is a city of transients and family is usually a long way away. You just need help sorting out what avenues are available. First thing to realize is our parents are no different than us - they want to be close to home when health issues are pressing. The good news is there are a number of services in the Atlanta area that can take the burden off of you. Whether you are looking for simply someone to help you monitor or more full-time help, Atlanta companies provide the full scope of health care options available. You just have to do some comparison shopping. Fortunately, with a big city like ours, there are a lot of choices out there - from part-time to full-time. My dad only needed help with simple tasks during the day and at night we found he could stay by himself. There is no one-size-fits-all. Every situation is different. Even when you have nailed everything down, you still have to be careful and double-check what the care provider is doing every day. The key is to interview the people providing the care. If possible meet the owners of the company providing the service. You will get a great feel how on top of things they are and how easy they will be to work with. In general, there are 3 types of services you can look into: 1. Supplying a companion 2. Personal attention 3. Skilled Nursing care There are a number of questions that need to be asked when you investigate your options: 1. How are your employees screened? 2. What are your fees? 3. What services will you and won't you supply for my parent? 4. How do you account for and verify hours on duty? 5. How often will I pay you? 6. How do go about changing care givers if there is a clash? 7. How do you handle transportation? Will you drive them where they need to go? (doctor's office, grocery store, etc.) 8. Will they drive them to the store? 9. How do we handle issues that arise after work hours? 10. Can you supply at least 3 references? There are at least 4 different kinds of companies that supply help in these area: 1. Direct Employers of the Caregivers 2. Services that refer Caregivers 3. Registries 4. Caregivers that operate on their own Don't over-complicate this with too much analysis. You do need to understand the lay of the land you are entering. We all tend to delay taking action on this because we wish the problem wasn't there. It is painful watching your loved one - someone who YOU were dependent on - require assistance to get along. So, that means, when you finally do start calling to check out your options, you probably need help right NOW. With all the news about the aging population, there are a lot of people out there supplying these services so consequently, there are a lot of shysters, too. For in-home care in Atlanta therefore, there is no substitute for checking out the details.
