Home Wind Kits - Will They Work On Your Chimney?

It is smart to look carefully into renewable ways of producing energy at your home. Home wind kits mounted on your chimney are a simple and cost effect way to harvest the free power moving around your house every day.

The best 2 places for installing wind turbines at home are:

1. Roof

2. Standalone Tower

While mounting on a tower is usually the best place to maximize your power output, that isn't always possible.

You cannot always put your windmill where it would work best for you. Many local community regulations can restrict your ability to locate it in a specific place. The space you have available and those local laws regulating the size and height of the turbine can conspire to make life difficult.

Usually, there is no problem though if you have access to your roof. There are a number of options there. And the local ordinances don't have much to say about what you put up there.

If you install the turbine at the right place, your roof can be a cornucopia of wind. Why is that the case? The power of "Roof Effect". Roof Effect multiplies the speed of the wind you find by a factor of up to three by concentrating its flow in a boundary layer that culminates at the roof's highest points.

As it turns out, your roof is the location for 2 very effective places to put your turbine - at the peak of the ridge line and on top of the chimney.

The interesting thing about locating on the chimney is the advent of a class of turbines that attempts (quite successfully) to mount there and blend in with the aesthetics of the roof.

That means that it is a lot less noticeable by the neighbors and people passing by.

There is a firm in the United Kingdom that markets a group of turbines under the moniker "Secret Energy Turbine" or, SET to take advantage of that. Their turbines sit atop chimneys and look like a part of the roof structure.

These are VAWTs or, vertical-axis turbines and are very quiet.

The power of this concept is 2-fold:

1. Takes advantage of Roof Effect

2. NIMBY effect (Not In My Back Yard) is effectively shut down - windmills like this aren't offensive to local authorities and the neighborhood like a lot of turbines can be This is the future of wind energy production.

In conclusion, one great way to take advantage of home wind kits is to mount them on your chimney and camouflage their appearance.
