Mezzanine floors are built above an existing area. If you want more space and don't want to do major renovating, a mezzanine floor is a good option. The unused space below a ceiling is utilised by having mezzanine floors, which comes in handy for storage for example and this is even more useful if there is not a lot of space below the mezzanine floor. It's infinitely safer not having a cluttered floor where people could trip and achieving this through the extra space provided by a mezzanine floor. Having mezzanine flooring increases the value of a property or building as there is additional space, which is particularly useful in factories for example where potential buyers will want lots of space for machinery. An alternative to mezzanine floors is to do a loft conversion if the building has a loft. Apart from this alternative being expensive and requiring lots of time to complete, it might also lead to people who utilise the building needing to relocate whilst work is going on so that health and safety rules are not violated. There will be a lot of dust and noise which will make it virtually impossible to work or live in the building during the loft conversion. Another option is to build an extension but like the loft conversion, this process will be more expensive and take longer than installing mezzanine flooring and people might need to relocate for a period while the building was taking place. Additionally it is significantly harder to obtain planning permission for an extension than for a mezzanine floor. A third alternative is getting space through cupboards or lockers. Cupboards/Lockers consume floor space though, which means reduced space for people to move unrestrictedly. Also bear in mind that you'll need to leave room for the cupboard/locker doors to open, so further space is taken up. You couldn't place desks right next to the cupboards for instance as you'd need to move them every time you wanted to open the cupboard. Smaller items could potentially be kept in front of the cupboard space but they too would have to get moved when you wanted access to the cupboard, which would be a tiresome thing to do often. You can add shelving to provide more space but it will be difficult to reach items on the top of shelves, particularly if they are high shelves. You might need to make use of ladders in order to reach the top shelves, which could be potentially dangerous if people fall off the ladders. Shelving also takes up valuable floor space. Another option is to rent storage space or rent further office space if required. This can be an expensive option, necessitating monthly payments or a big annual payment, which is potentially difficult for businesses to work around budget-wise. This alternative is also not practical if you have to stretch a business over two locations far away from each other or require frequent access to the items you are storing in another location potentially far away. In conclusion it is apparent that mezzanine flooring is the superior alternative for obtaining space.
