Business conferences are held for all sorts of purposes by companies, associations, and other professional organizations. Taking part in an educational program as well as getting an opportunity to mingle with other professionals is one of the advantages of membership in such professional organizations, and business speakers play an important role in such conferences. The business speaker normally serves as the main attraction for the conference, and a lot of audience members usually attend the conference because they're interested to hear what that particular business speaker has to say. Participants at a conference aim to gather insight or learn something new from business conferences, and they usually expect to get most of that new insight from business speakers and after dinner speaker. There are two kinds of business speakers and after dinner speakers invited to give talks at business conferences: generalists or specialists in a particular field. The audience is usually more impressed and more affected by generalists than by specialists, even though the former is usually not in a field directly related to the business or industry of most members of the audience. This could be an example of familiarity breeds contempt. A specialist from the same field will generally have little or no new ideas or concepts to share with the audience while a generalist's viewpoints may appear to be new and out of the box. While after dinner speakers who are specialists may tend to reinforce the common or prevalent idea or mindset of the audience, generalists tend to challenge such inbred thinking. Speakers who are generalists and strangers to the particular business or industry involved at the conference can challenge the audience to think outside the box and to explore greater possibilities. An after dinner speaker who is a specialist would not be very impressive to the audience if he can from the same business or educational background as them. Because specialists can't impress their audiences as easily, business conferences usually invite specialists with excellent work and educational backgrounds and achievements. The fact that business speakers, generalist or specialist, must be self-confident cannot be stressed enough. Great business speakers are dynamic and thought provoking and are usually very entertaining. The most impressive business speakers are able to make insightful conclusions related to the topic at hand from firsthand knowledge or experience. A business speaker covers topics that are related to whatever the conference is for, be it team building or be it for educational purposes. Most business speakers like to begin their talks with an anecdote to break the ice, while some like to dive right into the subject at hand. No matter what the topic is, the business speaker must be nspirational. The true mark of a successful business speaker is that he can make the audience feel something, to motivate them to act and to aim for something. Most conferences also have open forums at the end of the talks, making the experience more interactive and allowing members of the audience to ask the after dinner speaker some questions. Business speakers need to be well-versed with the topic at hand and they must be able to relay not only data, but insight as well.
