Server colocation involves physically moving your own server to the operation centre of a server colocation provider and having it installed in this facility. Your server therefore has access to more bandwidth and greater speeds through colocation services. You can also choose to rent a server from the colocation provider as opposed to having your own server installed. For individuals and small to medium size businesses that want access to expensive resources and equipment but cannot afford to run their own IT department, UK colocation is a solution. Smaller companies therefore have the ability to compete with larger companies that run costly IT departments. The colo provider has round-the-clock staff helping to solve any problems your server has and maintaining it. After your server has been installed, you'll receive an IP address which allows you and/or your customers to connect to your website on your server. Through using a server colocation provider, you don't have to pay for the large amount of bandwidth needed for a site that has large files being downloaded from it regularly or that has a lot of traffic. The server colocation provider does charge you for the service they provide but it's often much cheaper than if you were to do the hosting. If the electricity gets cut off the servers aren't affected as co-location providers have backup generators. Another benefit for using a co-location provider is that their server security is highly likely to be better than the server security at your home or office. You can enter colo provider requirements on comparison sites online, who will provide a range of colo providers and quotes depending on what specifications you entered in your search. If you are thinking of a particular provider, visit their website or call them to find out what services they offer and how much they charge for them. There is usually an online information request form you can fill in on the website if you want more information from the colo provider. The colo provider should utilise a Tier 1 International OC192 internet backbone and also connect to several hundred other internet networks. In addition to having redundant UPS, the co-location provider should provide 24/7 technical assistance to their clients. The colo provider should have been in business for at least ten years and have a history of being stable and profitable for many years. The more experience the provider has, the smoother your dealings with them will be, and the chances are greatly reduced that they will go bankrupt (which would cause you to have to find a new provider) Compare with different colo providers so you know how much future upgrades would cost. Ask to see a list of the colocation provider's customers so you can check how reliable they are with other clients, and also see if they have brand name clients, which would generally indicate that they are reliable.
