Part of learning how to play the guitar is to do some scales. The scales are practiced by the guitar player for several minutes to warm up the fingers for the actual playing of the pieces of music on the sheet. There are some who play cold and complain that their fingers are not doing what they are being told to do. Scales were created to make the fingers supple and flexible when playing an instrument.

These were also created to make sure that the guitar player understands that playing cold could damage the hands and cause some inflammations of the joints. There are some finger exercises that are also used in guitar learning that are recommended by teachers to their students. These finger exercises ensure that the fingers come to no harm when playing the instrument.

The warning that beginners and professional players always get but completely forget is that the scales and finger exercises are an essential part of playing the guitar. It helps protect the hand and the guitar as well. If the scales are performed and causes some sort of discomfort or pain, immediate attention should be done to examine the fingers. Sometimes the pain in the finger exercises and scales are ignored despite all the warnings.

This could lead to injuries of the tendons and joints, or inflammation that may cause the joints to freeze. When this happens, the only way to cure it would be to rest and get a medical treatment immediately. Three well know exercises are called "The Worm,' "The Slinky," and "The Spider." These exercises can be found online and are used to exercise the fingers as they walk the fretboard. These are designed for increasing and decreasing speeds in shifting chords and notes.

The notes could also be shifted to make it more complex and interesting. These exercises also stretch the fingers' capacity to reach for the next fret. Sometimes, the flesh between the fingers can get rigid that it makes it difficult for players to extend their reach. With these exercises, that problem with the rigid flesh can encourage it to be more stretchable with the continued practice.

It is very important for players to understand that the only way to prevent injuries from happening is to warm up the fingers gradually until the desired level is reached. It is also very important to stress that the exercises are not to be done excessively as this could also ruin the hands and fingers.
