When you are looking into how to use the wind on your property to make power, you need to really assess what resources you have available right off the bat. Just because you live in a place that seems like it has a lot of wind does not mean it will work for you. It is amazing how many people make that mistake in their zeal to become greener. Thankfully that is not always so though and you can really be miles ahead of the pack by digging into the details before you start looking into specific turbines to buy. The barriers that make home wind a hassle now are diminishing as there are more and more incentives to mini-size one's carbon impact on the environment. If you are going to delve into the wind you have on site, here is the procedure: 1. The first thing to do is choose a couple of locations that might work - like the roof or an open field where you might install a tower.Take the time to get some data on the actual wind in those spots. 2. Check out the government where you are and see if there are any restrictions on wind turbines. 3. Choose a couple of places on your property where you wouldn't mind having a wind turbine. The first place most people think of is their roof and that is not a bad place at all. Optimally it is always best if the windmill is at least 30 feet above the tree line but that is very hard to nearly impossible in some places, like cities. The wind on the roof can be a bit chaotic but a vertical wind turbine will perform well in that environment. After you chosen your spots, pick up an anemometer at Amazon for under $50. That little device is like a miniature windmill and will allow you to sample the wind over a period of a week or so at the places you have chosen. All anemometers come with software that will let you download the data and make sense out of it. Then, you will have a clear idea of the tradeoff between where you like to have the turbine ideally and where works best for wind power. Without a doubt it pays off in the long run to know what to expect before you begin with windmills for power creation at home. By being careful on the front end you can save yourself a lot of hassle later. After you have bought the turbine and installed it, it is costly to reposition it.
