Humans are capable of remarkable things, and there's no greater testament to that fact than the famous architectural accomplishments of civilizations gone by. Good things take time, however - just as Rome wasn't built in a day, neither will you reach the end goal for your business overnight. If you view your business as an ongoing project - like a great building being built brick-by-brick - then you can find it easier to stay focused, and avoid having something that seems like a good idea one day and is swiftly forgotten the next. Looking at any project as a whole can be quite daunting, but the process can often become much easier if you break it down into more manageable slices. 1. Consider Your Purpose And Set Your Goals Every project starts with an idea - and perhaps more importantly, a reason why you're doing it. For the pyramids it was as a final resting place for the kings and queens of Egypt before making their procession into the afterlife or for the Taj Mahal it was a symbol of eternal love. Businesses can often be much more simple - to make money - though exactly in what manner can require more thought and most people also have added personal reasons or ambitions. Set your focus first then you can begin to build on that. 2. Construct A Plan To Realistically Meet Your Goals The slave masters didn't just round everyone up and get them to start piling up the blocks of stone to see how they should fit together. First, a plan was drawn up, and just as your business plan would, helped describe accurately how to meet the project's goals in a realistic fashion. The key term there is realistic - don't set days to something that would probably take weeks. That leads to disappointment and stress - neither of which are very helpful. 3. Get The Basics Right First Without a solid foundation, your building would fall over or sink into the sand. In a business sense, that foundation is provided by trust in conjunction with either your products or service. Getting those key fundamentals right ensures any ongoing activities that build on it - such as marketing and promotion - are heading in the right direction. Otherwise you might end up with something akin to a business version of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. 4. Seek Help From Others Wherever Possible All famous architectural landmarks are the result of the combined efforts of thousands of people - granted, many of them against their will - and such undertakings would have been impossible by today's standards. Early on while your business is growing it is natural to want to do everything yourself. But unless you want it to take a lifetime - or ten lifetimes - to get to your goal, then at some point you will need to delegate a small portion or get expert help in areas you don't have time to educate yourself on. That means less stress, and more progress. 5. Be Proud Of What You Achieve Every accomplishment you make is a chance to stand back and gaze with pride upon what you've done - make sure you do so, as often it is one of the more rewarding qualities of running a business. Perhaps it will take 20 days or 20 years before you can finally say "I got there" and reach your end goal. But if you celebrate each small accomplishment along the way, the whole journey will be made a lot easier. Even today, people travel the world to witness the great architectural accomplishments of civilizations that existed thousands of years ago. Will your business outlast the people it serves? Perhaps not. But it should almost certainly have a positive impact on those that experience it - and that should be satisfaction enough for you as well.
