Why You Might Create A Locally-Themed Website

Creating a website based around your location is usually reserved for people who run a real-world business in their area. For example, if I ran a window cleaning business here in Sydney I would do keyword research on terms like "Sydney window cleaning" until I found something with enough searches and relatively low competition. Then I would use these terms in the domain name and core content of the site, as well as any ongoing articles and anchor text linking back to the site. There are also several advantages to doing something similar, even if you didn't have an existing offline business.

1. More Targeted Traffic

Getting targeted traffic is essential to the success of any website. By adding an extra attribute with which to target potential visitors you greatly increase the chance that your content will be relevant to them, and it opens up even more opportunities for meeting up with readers or offering real-world services to them if you choose to.

2. Less Competition

Usually the first thing you do when you start any form of website is choose a niche. If you're intent on getting it found quickly in search results and earning you revenue, then you pretty well have to stay away from anything with a large amount of competition (like Internet marketing, dating or weight loss) and choose a smaller sub-niche within those topics. If you choose to base your website around a particular location then you greatly reduce the competition, and you can still operate within a broad and popular niche.

3. Build An Exclusive Community

Another key element to establish a successful website - particularly with blogs and forums - is to grow a community of active visitors. This can be quite useful for releasing your own product, or generating ad revenue from the repeat traffic. How amazing would it be to be able to meet up with readers of your blog over coffee? Or to have special workshops with members of your forum?

When you build a locally themed website around your niche you increase the likelihood of such get-togethers happening, and it creates a much more exclusive feel to your website. You can also choose to monetize this in a number of ways, such as paid workshops and conferences or even one-on-one training - all of which can become highly profitable if you establish a sense of credibility.

4. Easily Connect With People

I love connecting with people through Twitter - it is fairly addictive and makes it possible to get highly targeted traffic by searching for users by interests or location. The trouble is unless you stay up until about 5 a.m. (like I often do) then it's pretty hard to connect with people on the other side of the world. It makes sense then to connect with people in your area, as you can start conversations with them in a timeframe that suits you and doesn't leave you tired and bitter the next day.

5. Local Advertising

Many people start a website and assume that they also have to market their website online - it's part of the whole "make money online" package right? However, there's no reason you can't also use real-world advertising techniques to help spread the word about your website - things like fliers, business cards, lawn advertising or even an ad in the local newspaper can be quite effective when distributed to the right people, especially if they promote a website specific to your local area.
