Windmill Costs - Exactly What Information Must You Know?

It is easy to get in over your head when you start looking at wind turbine pricing online. It seems unnecessarily difficult because of the way the manufacturers hide the real numbers in the data in their product literature.

What I mean by that is they give you way more information than you could ever possibly mentally process. When, in reality, all you want is a few key pieces of data to compare prices.

Needless to say, it will be advantage for you if you go into this process knowing what you are looking for! That sounds obvious but you would be surprised how many people go into a purchase this large with only superficial data.

The way to do that is to first get a feel for the kinds of things you could do with the power you make at your house. Do you want to charge some batteries or export power to the electric grid?

Also, you should get a grip on your wind resources. How much and how strong is the wind on your property? The way to check this out is to buy an inexpensive device called an anemometer which will record wind speed and direction. Do that for a few weeks at different points where you might install the windmill and you will have a good idea where you should place it.

As soon as you get that information together, these are the items you need to record on each turbine that you are considering in order to distinguish what you need from what just looks good:

Price…. When I say price, I mean right out of the box. That is not always clear. The reason it is unclear is so many manufacturers take pieces out and have you price them separately to make their device look the cheapest.

* Wear part replacement schedule

* Approximate cost of any annual work to be done

* Watt rating

* What comes with the kit?

* Useful life

* Lowest wind speed for making electricity

* Top speed before the unit shuts down in a storm or high winds

* Noise level at full speed

Wrapping things up - when you are considering various devices to buy, understanding the factors above will make your analysis much quicker and wind turbine pricing will be much clearer. The cost of the unit itself is just the tip of the iceberg and you need to understand all the other factors that will impact your experience as an owner.
