If you're looking into buying a wind turbine for your home you need to understand wind turbine parts. There are various parts that go into making a wind turbine. It is not a very complicated device, but you need to understand how the parts fit together in order to have a good command of how your windmill creates electricity.

These are the major parts of a wind turbine and how they interact with each other:

* The blades or its rotor system - these are assembled around a hub and can be anywhere from 3 to 5 individual blades but usually in most horizontal systems nowadays they consist of three blades. The blades can be made out of a variety of different materials. The most popular materials are metal and polycarbonate. The blades will get the most wear of any of your other parts.

* The generator - this is the part that converts mechanical energy from the wind into electrical energy they can be transmitted to a battery. The generator is like a motor. It converts one form of energy and to another. For you to be able to use the electricity that you want to use, you have to put it in a form that your appliances can consume. That form is alternating current or AC power.

* The driveshaft - the driveshaft is connected to the rotor hub and turns in the blades are moved by the wind. The driveshaft is usually made out of steel.

* The housing - the housing contains the generator and the shaft of the wind turbine. The housing can be made out of metal or polycarbonate material. The tower or foundation of the wind turbine - this is the part that puts the wind turbine in the path of the wind flow. These can be anywhere from a few feet tall to hundreds of feet in the air.

* The tower usually comes separately. You have to search for a tower apart from the wind turbine itself and a can cost as much as the entire wind turbine does.

The way the parts of wind turbine fit together and work are not that complicated. You are simply taking the mechanical energy created by the turning blades and turning that into direct-current and then changing that direct-current into alternating current they can be used by your appliances.

Wind turbine parts are simple but understanding them is an essential part of being a windmill owner.
