Vertical Windmill Kit - What Are The Types?

The vertical wind turbine kit is going to be the urban solution to the energy crisis before too long. Its great performance in low wind and its aesthetic appeal will drive the popularity.

Not too many years ago, when someone said "wind turbine" they meant only one thing - a horizontal, Dutch type wind turbine. That is definitely not the case anymore. There are new varieties coming on the scene every year.

What are the pros of going with a vertical wind turbine kit for your home?

1. Noise level is much less - wind turbines in general have a reputation for being loud and that perception has come from the noise made by large wind turbines. Vertical wind turbines are much quieter and actually have a bit of a calming effect on people watching them.

2. At home in turbulent wind conditions - horizontal wind turbines all have a tail assembly that turns them into the prevailing wind. Not so with verticals. They turn clockwise and then counter-clockwise depending on where the wind is coming from. That gives them a lot more versatility in turbulent wind environments like your roof.

3. Smaller square footage required - traditional horizontal windmills have been known to take up a lot of space because of the size of their blades and the blades' swept area. That means the amount of effective space the blade path takes up. If you are operating on a roof environment that is important because with a smaller square footage requirement, you can conceivably install more turbines. The close proximity doesn't negatively affect them, actually it can enhance their performance.

Now these are the 2 types that dominate the category "vertical wind turbine kits":

1. The Savonius type wind turbine - these have been around the longest and mostly in water applications for at least the last 300 years. These are drag devices as opposed to lift type which constitute the majority of horizontal wind turbine designs.

2. The Darieus type wind turbine - many of the larger vertical wind turbines are Darieus because of their greater efficiency. (They are technically of greater efficiency than the Savonius but still nowhere near the efficiency of a horizontal windmill yet.)

Summarizing - if you are looking into a vertical wind turbine kit for your home you are looking in the right direction. The future of home energy cost reduction is in making these devices more and more efficient and placing multiple units on residential roofs.
