There are just so many bikes to look at and choose from, and if you don't know too much about it, you may feel intimidated. However, one thing that you should keep in mind is that the employees who work in these shops do so for a reason. They have chosen to work there because of the fact that they have a passion for biking, and in most cases they will be more than happy to assist you and advise you on your purchase. Chances are that there is probably at least one shop in your local area that specializes in bikes. It's just that these shops are not something that you will find all over the place. It depends upon what area you live in, but more often than not, you will only have a couple of shops to choose from. Either way, you will only be able to find out which shop you like best by visiting each one. Chances are, if you are into biking you probably have some friends that are as well. Just ask around and see where other people are going. Then visit the shops and see what kind of products they carry and how friendly the staff is. You will have a much better experience overall if you can find a good bike shop that has a friendly staff that are eager to help. Once you have discovered a shop that you like, go ahead and start getting to know the employees a little better. These are the people that will be able to help you the most, because they know all of the best places to ride as well as which accessories and bike parts are going to work best for you. If you are the do it yourself kind of person, you could even take the opportunity to get some advice from the staff regarding the maintenance aspects of your bike. In most cases, these shops pride themselves on excellent customer service. This is actually what sets them apart from their competition, so they strive to be the best. A lot of times you can tell right away upon entering a shop whether or not the customer service is going to be good. You should probably expect to get greeted upon your entrance, and the staff should be dressed either in uniforms or at least clean and tidy attire. You can also tell a lot about a shop by the way that they display their merchandise. Plus, you should be able to get intelligent and helpful answers from the staff whenever you have questions. The people working should know a great deal about bikes, and have some general expertise in this area. No matter what, you are going to be so much more likely to get the specialized service and selection that you are looking for if you take your business to a bike shop rather than a general merchandise store.
