As you are looking at wind turbine pricing there are two major kinds to learn about. What you pick is not obvious and will take some time to understand and vet. However, the first thing you must do is know what you are after. That is not an easy question but it is one you must answer before you begin. Will you be restricted in any way by permitting issues? Or, will your local government tell you where you will have to place your turbine? You can learn about all this with a trip to your local city hall. Then, you need to pay attention to the wind resources on your property. The character of the wind on each property is unique. The obstacles in the path of the prevailing wind will determine what wind you have at your disposal. While this short list is not exhaustive, these are the 2 main types you will be likely considering for your house: 1. Vertical Wind Turbines - these look a bit like a milk churn. The shaft on these rotates in a plane straight up and down. 2. Horizontal Wind Turbines - these are the ones that look like a windmill. The shaft rotates parallel to the earth. Without a doubt you will be shelling out a lot more for a vertical than a horizontal. A lot of the price difference is the fact that the vertical units are new. Another reason is they are quite ornamental and you pay for that styling. Many of the vertical turbines are mounted on roofs of homes. They are quite easy to mount there and operate well in the turbulent wind environment found on the roof. Horizontal wind turbines have their inherent advantages, too. They perform much better in a strong wind and can produce a good bit more power due to their greater efficiency. Horizontal wind turbines can achieve efficiencies approaching 55% while vertical wind turbines really never make it past 35%. Summarizing - which type of wind turbine you choose will have a lot to do with how much power you are able to make at home. The good thing about verticals is they take up little space and mount well on a roof. The good thing about a horizontal is they can generate a lot more power but they really need to be mounted higher into the wind stream in order to take advantage of their greater efficiency. Wind turbine pricing needs to be carefully analyzed in light of these substantial differences.
