When you first start thinking about wind generators and all they can do for you, it is very easy get carried away in the moment and not pay attention to the details that will make all the difference in the world when it comes to the success of your project. You simply must slow down and do some homework before you get too far into this - otherwise, you will end up sub-optimizing your project and getting a lot less energy from the wind than you expect. The big question everyone has is,"How much electricity can I actually generate with my wind turbine?" To answer that question though, you need to do some in-depth investigation into the wind resources and other aspects of energy creation on your property. These are the big categories and steps you need to take: * First, you need to clearly understand where the best place is to get the most wind energy on your land. It could well be it's the roof or, it could be somewhere else entirely. You need to first imagine a few places that you would like to potentially put the wind turbine. These need to be places that will get the most wind and not be a bother to the neighbors. * Then, you need to assess those spots and make sure there is realistically enough wind energy there to drive your windmill. The way you do that is very simple. You purchase a small device called an anemometer. These are handheld and cost generally under $50 and available at places like Amazon.com. * Once you have gotten your anemometer, all you need do is put it up in places that you envision installing the turbine. Collect data for a few weeks and then integrate that knowledge with your understanding of wind seasonality. If you have the time, it's also a good idea to visit sites like Weather Underground.com and investigate the seasonality of your particular wind patterns. * Also, inquire about any local permitting restrictions that might keep you from putting your wind turbine up exactly where you want it. This is not very hard to do, but you do need to check in with your local government with the city or county, and ask them what permits are required to put up a wind device on your property. * Once you've done all that, you're a very good position to look for specific devices that you might buy and install. You must be honest with yourself though and determine if you really want to build this from scratch or whether you want to buy it in kit form and just assemble it. Home made wind generators are a great way to cut costs at home. But, to get the most out of them you must do your homework upfront and be honest with yourself about how much energy you're willing to put into the project. Once you done this analysis, you are in a great position to move forward, buy a terrific wind turbine that fit your particular situation, and start saving money immediately as the blades start turning.
