In today's modern world, the sliding doors have become popular and hence, the need of sliding door locks have also increased. Most of the apartments and townhomes make use of the sliding patio doors because of their ability of open up more space for open air and also because they are known for their easy access. However, there is one downside to these doors. The locking system which is conventionally used in these door are very much flimsy and thieves can easily overcome them. Moreover as these locks grow old, the parts become far more vulnerable to theft compared to the new locks. This problem can however be overcome because there are a number of locking systems available for securing these doors in a better way.

Crime rates are increasing and the incidents of theft and burglary are on the rise. It is because of this reason that people need to secure their sliding doors properly. One of the most popular form of the locks is jimmy plate. This device needs to be screwed to the upper channel of the sliding door. Once this device is fixed in place, an intruder cannot enter or open the door simply by lifting the plate off the track. An attempt to do so will circumvent the lock on the door. This device can be bought from any home supplies shop or any hardware shop.

If jimmy plate is not your choice, you can use yet another security device which is known as safety bar. This device needs to be used as an attachment on the glass of the door. This device is positioned in as way so that no one from outside can slide it open. These locking devices are low cost devices and they can be easily installed. As far as positioning of the device on the glass is concerned, it is generally fixed at the bottom of the door. However, just in order to attain added security, people often use an additional one at the mid section of the door. After you have locked the door using this sliding door lock, make sure that you go outside and check properly whether the locking mechanism has worked exactly the way you wanted or not!

Selecting the proper door lock is also important. Different people use sliding doors in different places. For example, a sliding door can open up to a balcony or perhaps it can open up to place where valuables are kept. You need to find out the level of security required in a particular area and the buy a door lock. If you incorrectly select a lock, you will be threatened by burglary and hence, door lock selection becomes a major concern. Proper selection will determine the level of security that you can add up. Luckily, there is large collection of locks to select from. Each one of them come with their sweet little twist which can increase the security levels significantly. Hence, you need to select your sliding door lock properly.
