Many people do not know how to give a proper speech after dinner. Before the actual speech an after dinner speaker must consider a lot of things. This is not similar to speaking at a social even organized by a family member. The main thing that an after dinner speaker has to consider the quality of the audience. Many similar events might have many among the audience who are much more well-informed and literate than the speaker. so, evaluation of listener is a necessary step before the actual speech. The audience's sophistication can be understood through their dress, the type of event, ratio of male and female, age group of the audience and many other things. the speech must be prepared with the country where it will be given in mind, as not to offend anyone from that country. An after dinner speaker must do his research well before he speaks at the event.

An After dinner speaker has to entertain their audience through their speech. Addressing the audience in entertaining way and directly looking at their eyes when speaking is a must for speakers. A speaker is not there to annoy the listeners. A simple friendly gesture or playful engagement of the audience is the best way to go.

After dinner speaker must not be nervous when speaking. If a speaker is nervous it can clearly be heard in his voice and the audience certainly would not enjoy that. A speaker has to maintain his/her confidence and composure. After you get in front of the audience clear you head, take a few moments and start speaking confidently. Starting off with a joke or for serious even starting off with a specific point in mind is always a good practice.

Another thing that an after dinner speaker must remember is to never start a speech with a set of text in your hands. Audience normally have a negative reaction when a speaker get up in the podium with written text in their hands. Using cue cards instead is a good idea. A speaker must understand that he is there to give a speech and not to read a book. Thus, after dinner speakers might make use of cue cards when needed. Maintaining speech flow and composure is a must for the speaker

Another thing an after dinner speaker must consider is never drink before you give a speech. Speaker must say sober when they speak. A drunken man/woman is not what people expect when they hear a speech. Another golden rule for after dinner speakers is to keep the speech to a minimum length. If you can entertain your audience for long that is fine, but you must not take them to the point where they would get tired of you. The sign of a good speaker is that, they know just about when the audience have had enough and take their leave just before that. 20 minutes to 30 minutes is the ideal length for any type of after dinner speech.
