What a place is today is because of what it is in the past. Just like what happened in the history of Peterborough, a city in the East of England. Isn't it a good idea to know what the city is before we came to know it in its present state? Learning about the origins of things will make people appreciate things even more.

According to the history of Peterborough uk, the city first became a Saxons settlement. The original name of Peterborough was Medehamstede, a name for the village built by the Saxons, which means meadow homestead. On 655, an abbey was built but was abandoned on the year 870 due to the Danes and their plundering. As the years have passed, the city managed to build a new abbey and constructed a wall around their settlement to protect themselves against further attacks from the Danes. From the name Medehamstede, it was changed to St. Peters Burgh because of its fortified settlement. Soon, a market was built, and the city continued to prosper and grew to become a small town. However, on 1070, an army of Danes, together with some Saxons, attempted to overthrow William the Conqueror, thus, attacking and burning down Peterborough.

Peterborough became a small and so far, an insignificant city that was commanded by the abbots during the Middle Ages. The city experienced yet again another fire, but managed to recover again and prosper even more. The city's main industry became wool weaving on the 12th century, along with its annual fairs and the establishment of a leper hospital and Longthorpe Tower in the 1300s.

The abbey of Peterborough was closed down in 1539, following the orders of Henry VII of closing all the abbeys in England. Then on 1541, this abbey became a cathedral. Because of its growing population which became 1500, Peterborough became a humble official city. The population grew to 2000 people on the 17th century. Peterborough, along with other cities in the past, endured the attacks of the plague which caused the death among its population.

The 18th century proved to be a time when Peterborough improved in both population and facilities. The Napoleonic wars brought forth greater demands of the town's products, thus, making the town flourish. The first theatre was built, alongside with the building of the Custom House and the creation of the Improvement Commissioners by the Parliament.

The history of Peterborough marked the 19th century due to the additional betterments of the city. The population prospered, introducing more establishments in the area. An infirmary, gas street lighting, corn exchange, the St. Peters Training College, iron foundry, elastic webbing industry, brick making, railway, piped water supply and the first public

Since then, Peterborough continued to move on forward and develop. The coming of the electricity and other technologies resulted to the city that we are now familiar today. From a simple and menial colony to a flourishing city in England, Peterborough has its fair share of history. The history of Peterborough is really a rich one that is really worth recognizing by many people.
