Symptoms of Lactose intolerance in adults are much more distinguishable than in babies. Lactose is a sugary substance found in all milks and consequently in all the dairy products. It is digested with the help of lactase which is produced by our bodies. If enough lactase is not produced by the body such that it cannot digest lactose then the individual is known to be lactose intolerant and this disorder is known as lactose intolerance.

There are many symptoms of lactose intolerance in adults. Some of these symptoms are: constant diarrhea, stomach inflation, pain in the abdominal area, tiredness, cramp in the stomach and breaking wind. A huge amount of lactose intake can severe the conditions of a lactose intolerant person. The symptoms will emerge within 30 minutes of such an intake since there will not be enough lactase in the body to digest lactose. There are obvious differences among lactose tolerant and lactose intolerant people such that the former may be able to consume huge amount of lactose while the later might even refuse to have a sip of milk.

Once you experience any of the above mentioned symptoms, then you are required to consult a doctor. The tests that are carried out for lactose intolerance are quite simple. There are three types of tests and are used to identify whether or not our bodies can digest lactose by producing lactase. All the three types of tests are carried out before and also after giving sugary drinks to the tested individual. In blood sugar test, the individual is asked to not consume food 12 hours before the test. The blood is tested for sugar level before and after a sugar drink. In hydrogen breath test, levels of hydrogen are measured after every 15 minutes over two hours duration. In stool test, lactic acid is found in stools of children less than 5 years after. If sugar level is the same in blood sugar test then there is a sign of lactose intolerance. In a hydrogen breath test, if hydrogen level is the same before and after the intake of sugary drinks then the person is lactose intolerant.

Similarly, in a stool test, if acid level is the same as before then the individual is tested positive in lactose intolerance test. The outcome of these tests will be disclosed to you immediately but the results of a stool test may take two to three days.

Only lactose free products should be consumed by lactose intolerant adults. The foods that are needed to be expelled out of the diet include; baked products, pancake, cereals, mash potato, soups, snacks, butters, salad and mayonnaise. You might have paved a way for the symptoms to get started. Lactose intolerance in adults may occur even if the person who has never experienced a problem while consuming dairy products.
