Cosmetic surgery is often mistakenly called plastic surgery although it actually makes up only one area of plastic surgery. It is a specialized area dealing with the use of surgical procedures to enhance, restore and/or reshape parts of the body to change the overall aesthetic. There are so many different procedures that fall under the category of cosmetic surgery. As with fashion, there are trends which come and go as the years pass. Some of the most common surgeries that people will most likely be familiar with are breast augmentations, rhinoplasties, face lifts and liposuction or tummy tucks. People use cosmetic surgery as a means of achieving a particular ideal that they have in mind in terms of appearance. This could mean making something bigger to emphasize it, such as the breasts, or making something smaller to make it less noticeable, such as a pronounced or crooked nose. These are only two of many examples. It is possible to completely change one's appearance in this way as almost every part of the body can be manipulated to look different with the advancements in today's medicine. Liposuction removes excess fat from the body, rendering the patient slimmer, whilst hair transplants can be done to combat receding hairlines or thinning hair. Because there are so many options of what can be altered, cosmetic surgery is not limited to any one age group or type of person. Older women especially, though men are also included, may opt for a face lift in order to achieve a more youthful appearance. This involves making discreet incisions at the edges of the face, usually by the ears and hairline, and pulling the skin to tighten it, minimizing the appearance of wrinkles in the process. In some Asian countries, procedures on the eyes are becoming more popular for children. Certain facial or bodily features that may be specific to a particular ethnic group can now be eliminated or enhanced or even attained by other ethnic groups thanks to modern medicine. For example, in recent years, operations on the buttocks have become very popular to enhance the shape, making it more pronounced. Many of these surgeries become popular due to the increasing interest in celebrity culture and the many famous figures who undergo procedures to maintain an image of beauty and perfection. Their decisions to go under the knife often influence their fans and followers, who then opt to do the same or similar. There are many scams however, with individuals posing as doctors, claiming to be able to perform procedures at a cheaper cost, often with dire consequences. It is not unusual for botched operations to result in serious long term complications or even death. A lot of people fly to foreign countries to have these operations done due to the cost in their own country. It is important to always consult with a professional before deciding to undergo any physical changes, as they will be properly equipped to give correctly assess what needs to be done.
