Wind turbine kits can work almost anywhere you have sufficient wind. But, what is sufficient wind? You need at least 9 mph to make the project an obvious winner. Because of Roof Effect, that is definitely achievable on the average roof but you have to do a bit of homework to make sure. Here are the criteria that you should judge wind turbine kits by: * What are the parts that are included in the kit? This is not always straightforward. Most people expect that when they buy a home wind turbine that it will be ready to go and make power, once installed. However, some manufacturers leave out some parts for you to buy yourself. You have to be careful to make note of those parts and add them in separately when doing comparison shopping. * What is the cost of the kit? The "first cost" is just one aspect of the cost of home wind turbine kits. You also must estimate the cost of the tower or pedestal you will mount it on. As well as the cost of hooking the system up with your home's electrical system. So, there may be some expenses for an electrician to do some of that for you, unless of course you have that expertise yourself. Especially, if you are going to electrical grid, there will be extra costs for a grid tie inverter and the cost to install that. * How much power will it produce in a given wind? The power rating of the wind turbine is just its ability to make a certain amount of power at a certain wind speed - usually, a wind speed in the high 20's (mph). Most people assume that they will get the rated capacity out of the wind device they buy. The problem is most of your wind - even in a very windy state - will be at a lower speed much less than the speed they use to calculate the power rating for marketing purposes. In conclusion, it is good to thoroughly consider what you have got to work with and what exactly the wind turbine kits you are looking at will allow you to do. Keep in mind, the first cost the unit is nowhere near the total cost. Take your time to and study the market along with what comes with the kit and what doesn't come with the kit. Only then can you compare apples to apples and perform an accurate analysis in order to make the right choice for you.
