The way to do that is with a small device called an anemometer which emulates the action of a wind turbine. 2. Where is the optimal location on my property to place the turbine? To know the optimal location for your wind turbine you must not only understand the wind patterns that run your property but also understand local permitting restrictions. On top of that, it is good to check out what is the most aesthetically pleasing place that will least likely attract the wrath of your neighbors. Once you done these two things, you're in a good position to spec out the exact wind turbine that you are going to buy. Depending on where you are going to locate your device, there are two styles of wind turbine to consider. Horizontal axis and vertical axis wind turbines are available. Vertical axis wind turbines are typically better on roof tops. The reason for that is they do not have a tail assembly. The tail assembly that identifies the more common horizontal axis turbine is a bit problematic for a roof situation. That is because the wind turbine is constantly trying to find the strongest wind direction to optimize power output. The wind direction on a roof is very chaotic and therefore the horizontal turbine can be swinging around in various directions all day long, trying to optimize and find the predominant wind. That can be very irritating for your neighbors to have to watch and it is one of the principal reasons why people have a hard time with wind turbines in their neighborhoods in the first place. By and large, the promise of wind technology is distributed power generation though. That is, power generation accomplished at our homes and businesses versus a central power plant, like the majority of the power we consume now. For years and years we have been tethered to private utilities and public utilities that produce power for the masses and distributed to individual homes. That is a fine model if you have unlimited fossil fuel reserves as we seemed to think we had. Since we are running out of fossil fuels to burn in these central electricity generation plants, we now need to move to the more sustainable power generation model in which power is made in the place that is consumed. Wind turbine kits are a powerful part of rolling this distributed generation out. When you decide to buy wind turbine kits for your home, you need to make sure you put first things first. Don't get in too much of a hurry and forget the fundamentals.
