Angle grinders are very commonly used tools, but it is very important that you educate yourself about them a little bit before you go ahead and pick one up.

Consider what size you are going to need to buy. This will depend heavily upon the kind of projects that you plan on doing. These machines can actually get quite heavy if you get one of the larger ones, but a large one could possibly be necessary if you are going to be working with a large area. The only problem is, if you get one that is fairly heavy you are going to end up having to take several breaks throughout the process, because the weight of the machine will tire you out quickly.

For this reason, whenever possible you may want to opt for a machine that is a bit lighter. If you don't plan on doing any extremely lengthy projects, it may be a good idea to get a smaller machine.

You can use these tools for cutting and sanding, and you can even use them to remove rust or old paint. People often use them to sharpen their other tools as well. Just remember to carefully choose the wheel that you are going to use and make sure that it suits the task at hand. For example, you can cut certain metals like iron or steel with just a standard cutter. However, you will have to get something like a diamond cutter if you need to cut something like stainless steel. This will avoid the issue of your cutter getting worn out too quickly.

Remember that you should expect to pay substantially more for a diamond cutter, but it may simply be necessary if you have the need to cut heavy-duty materials.

Angle grinders are also great for taking off rust. As a matter of fact, a lot of auto body shops have them on hand for just this reason. The best way to use them for a task like this would be to get a wire brush attachment. This will also work great if you need to remove old paint.

What about sanding? It's true that you can use these tools for sanding as well. While there are sanders available for this task, it's nice to have a tool that can sand in addition to a multitude of other things. Keep in mind that you will have to have the ability to remain very steady if you are doing any finishing that yields a delicate result. Depending upon your chosen disc, you can also use these tools for heavier duty sanding, but be aware that if you are not careful you may leave a few marks behind.

The most important thing to keep in mind when working with these tools is safety. Make sure that you use protective eyewear or a face shield, and do not wear any loose fitting clothing. Angle grinders are great tools that can be used for many things, you just have to make sure that you keep yourself safe at all times!
