What Are Coloured Contact Lenses?

Contact lenses are a common accessory for people with vision problems who aren't interested in wearing glasses. You can choose from quite a variety of different contact lenses including hard, soft, monovision and hybrid. The choice you ultimately make will be based on your specific vision problem and what type you find most comfortable. Another variation that many people opt for are coloured contact lenses. Coloured contacts come in a few different varieties of their own, with each one providing a different benefit to the user. Coloured contacts are constructed to copy the coloured part of the eye, which is called the iris. When they are in place, it's often impossible to tell that you're wearing a contact lens at all. The part of a coloured contact that covers your pupil is clear so you'll be able to see.

One type of coloured contact lens is called a visibility tint lens. A visibility tint contact lens has a light tint so if you drop the lens anywhere it is easy to find. So many people have spent so much time on their hands and knees searching for lost contact lenses that visibility tint lenses are incredibly useful. Visibility tint contact lenses are for practicality only, and don't alter the colour of your eyes like some other coloured contacts.

A type of contact lens that does affect your eye colour is called an enhancement tint lens. The enhancement tint contains a translucent tint that is designed to enhance the natural colour of your eyes. This means your eye colour remains the same, but will be more blue or green or whatever you have already. Someone who already has a fairly strong tint in their eye colour can make them really stand out with an enhancement tint. Enhancement tint contact lenses are a little bit darker than a visibility tint.

For those who want to alter the natural colour of their eyes, the colour tint contact lens is available in popular brands such as Acuvue Oasys. Colour tints are meant to stand out and are usually available in a wide selection of colours that includes violet, green, amethyst and gray. Light-filtering tint contact lenses are a specialty lens for situations where certain colours need to be enhanced over others. Athletes or sports fans often use them so they can see the ball or puck more clearly.

Even though colored contact lenses are fun and trendy, they're still contact lenses that are to be used as a medical accessory, just like clear contacts. You should care for your coloured contacts just as you would any others type of prescription lens, and don't share yours with anyone else. Eye infections are a common problem with contact lens use, and if you let someone else place your contacts into their eyes, you are only going to make the risk higher.

Whether you have a history of misplacing your contact lenses, want to get a clearer look on the playing field, or just want to experiment with a new eye colour, choosing coloured contact lenses can inject some fun into an otherwise routine process.
