How To Choose Between A Down Comforter And Synthetic Down

Many different kinds of products are used in the making of a down comforter and synthetic down comforters. Down is not the typical feather that you think of; it is a cluster of filaments found underneath the feathers of geese that traps air to keep the bird warm. It is a terrific insulator and it is soft and lightweight. By understanding down products better, you can make a more informed decision about your new purchases. If you have allergies to goose and duck down, they make a synthetic down product also.

Goose and duck down is what is used in bedding products. Goose down tends to be the warmer of the two. White goose down is also quite luxurious and is soft and light. Natural down comforters have several advantages over a synthetic down comforter. The natural product has more small air pockets to trap in heat and keep you warm. All of these small air spaces make the comforter light and fluffy. Natural products also wick away moisture better than synthetic. This allows for a product that is more breathable and comfortable. All natural products can work well in a wider variety of climates because of this feature.

The fill power is an important aspect of down comforters. This tells you the cubic inches of down per ounce. A higher number indicates larger clusters and better insulation. If the product has 500 or more, it is considered very good. This will be the fluffiest and warmest down comforter that you can buy. A fill power of 600 is about the highest that you can purchase.

Thread count is also something to think about. This does not have any influence on the warmth of the down comforter, but it does change the look and feel of it. Luxury down comforters will have a thread count over 300 normally. Lower numbers can still be good and durable.

If you have allergies, unwashed fill might cause a problem. To avoid this, you can look for a down comforter with a high cleanliness rating, or get a cover for the product. Look for ones that are labeled hypoallergenic. Going to a synthetic product is your other choice. These are made to imitate real down with man made materials. They can still be a nice comfortable and warm product with a similar look and feel. Still, nothing can beat the warmth and comfort of the real thing. Look around and find the product that will work best for you. It will bring many nights of warmth and great sleep.
