When making down comforters or a synthetic down comforter, several different types of products may be used. While many people think that down is a feather, it is actually a filament cluster under the feathers of ducks and geese that has the ability to trap air and keep the animal warm. It is lightweight, soft, and is an exceptional insulator. When you understand the different down products that are available, it can help you to make a better buying decision. Synthetic down products are for sale in case you are sensitive to allergies with duck or goose down. Down comforters will use either duck or goose down as the filler. The warmer option tends to be goose down. The most luxurious is white goose down because it is so soft and light. A synthetic down comforter has several disadvantages over the real thing. With the actual natural product, there are many small air spaces which trap heat to help warm you. The comforter is fluffy and light due to all of the tiny air spaces as well. Another benefit of natural down is that it has the ability to wick away moisture quickly. This creates a comforter that is more comfortable and very breathable. Many climates can use these products because of the breathability of down. When looking at down comforters, the fill power is important. Fill power lets you know cubic inches of product per ounce. Better insulation is indicated by larger clusters of down and a higher fill power. Something that has 500 or more is an excellent insulator. A high fill number will be the warmest down comforter available for purchase. One with a fill of around 600 is pretty much the best that you can buy. Do not forget about the thread count. Thread count may not change how warm the down comforter is, but it can alter the feel and look of it. Something over 300 is usually found in luxury down comforters. A lower thread count can still look good and function well. If you suffer from allergies, then look for something that has washed fill. Look for a down comforter that has a good rating for cleanliness, or you may also find covers for them. Some might be labeled hypoallergenic, which is a good thing to look for. Your other choice is to buy synthetic down. Synthetics are made to imitate real down comforters as much as possible. They will still look and feel similar to the real thing, but nothing will be quite as nice as real down in terms of warmth. Find something that is the best product for you, and enjoy many nights of wonderful sleep.
