Window cleaning has always been a very lucrative way of earning a living. Many of the medium to large custodial services were started by the owner walking down the street with a bucket and a squeegee. They are an ever present fixture in the multi billion dollar custodial services industry. Many companies do nothing but windows and they enjoy every cent they make.

A small window washing business can be started on a shoestring budget if the notion strikes you. The only things that need to be known is how the water and cleansing agent acts on the soils on the window. Additionally, you need ability to remove it from the surface. There are any number of manuals available to teach you the techniques and the many videos will show you the movements needed.

There are a few things you need that are easily obtained from your local janitorial supply house. A bucket to have plenty of water available. You can fill this with fresh water at each place you are working. It should be fresh, cold water and you will also need a quality, non lint producing cloth or two. This cloth will be used to wipe solution from the corners and the top of each pane as well as the squeegee, if used. The cleansing solution can be anything from the products labeled window cleaner to what the professionals use and that is normal dish washing soap.

The squeegee, which should be used, can be any length, however, it should be at least 12 to 18 inches long. This piece of equipment should be combined with a wet bar. This is a cloth covered bar that is affixed to a rigid pole for the application of the cleaning solution.

The only other tool could be an extension pole should you not be tall enough to reach to the top of the average window you will be cleaning. This pole is a very important part of the complete set you have as many of the windows in commercial buildings, even homes, are tall.

In order to get started out in this business, you may need to clean a few windows for free so you will get some valuable references and some word of mouth advertising. This will get your foot in the door as far as becoming a presence in the area you choose to operate in.

Another way to get into the business is to sub contract some work from a regular Commercial Cleaning Service. They will always have work and they may not want to deal with the smaller projects that would be just the right size for your early days.

As it has been stated, the acquisition of the necessary tools and equipment as well as the needed training can be had for a very small investment. The ability to move around and talk with people and ask for the work can be an easily attained skill as well as a fun activity. The work is not hard, just methodical and carefully done. Many areas may want you to have a window cleaning license or other permits to operate and some may have other restrictions.
