When you purchase a new down comforter, you want it to be in good condition for a long time. High end down comforters can often be an expensive item to buy. Many years of use and enjoyment can be had from it with the proper care. Even after years of using it, the bedding can still be warm and look great. If you want it to last as long as you can, there are a couple of things to consider doing. By following a few guidelines, you can protect your investment. There will not be a need to replace it for years by doing this. How to wash a down comforter is the first thing that you must consider. They can be washed lightly by hand or taken to the dry cleaners on most occasions. It will be cheaper if you wash it yourself, but this can sometimes be difficult given the size of down comforters. Down feathers take up large volumes of space and may be difficult to clean thoroughly. Do not use bleach when cleaning by hand. Often people use bleach thinking that their bedding is pure white only to find out that it was really some kind of cream color or off white. It is important to read the instructions for care of the down comforter prior to buying the product. With some down comforters, it may be okay to put them in the washing machine on delicate. Various materials and brands can have different directions, so it is important to read them beforehand. After washing a down comforter, it will take a long time to dry because of its volume. When picking between dry cleaning and washing it yourself, this is something to consider. A cover for down comforters is an alternative to washing them all the time. This protects from everyday use grime and dirt. A cover is easy to replace or wash every once in a while. Covers are much easier to wash than a down comforter and take up much less space in the washing machine. The one downside to a cover is the extra cost of purchasing it. What you save on dry cleaning can make up for it though. It is a personal preference for what you decide to do. Another function of getting a cover is that it makes it easy and inexpensive to change how your down comforter looks. Different colors or designs could be used at different times of the year without the cost of buying a new comforter. Pick what you like best and enjoy it.
