Hair Feathers Are The Latest Fashion Trend

The latest fad in fashion is the hair feathers phenomenon. Native Americans wore feathers in their hair for hundreds of years, but for different reasons than we do today. Fashion divas such as Cher wore some feathers in her hair decades ago, but the style did not grab the mainstream until this past year. Feather hair extensions really caught on when celebrities such as Miley Cyrus, Gwyneth Paltrow, and especially Steven Tyler were seen wearing them. Personally, I think the rage finally took hold with Steven Tyler\'s weekly appearance on American Idol this year, with rooster feathers weaved into his graying brown hair.

What kind of hair feathers are they wearing? The most popular and sought after feathers come from a roosters back, called a saddle. A particular type of rooster is breed for the long, beautiful plumes on its back. The feathers have traditionally been used to create lures for fly-fishing. They are between 3 to 16 inches in length and the center shaft is very flexible. One rooster saddle can hold 200-500 feathers of varying lengths, but the long, thin ones that go from a rooster\'s neck to the tip of its tail are the prized hair feathers. The other feathers that are popular today are peacock feathers, with deep hues of green, blue, and teal.

How are hair feathers attached? Feathers are attached to extension micro-beads, and those are clamped or bonded to a strand of hair near the scalp. The feather hair extension can be treated like the hair on your head. It can shampooed, conditioned, blow-dried, brushed, straightened, and curled, and will last between six to eight weeks. Some people will go to a hair stylist to have the extensions placed; others are able to do it themselves. The varieties of the extensions are endless, with all the different colors, lengths, and widths. Some opt for one or two long single feathers clamped to their hair, or a group of three or four bonded together.

Not sure about the color or style of hair feathers? The place to go for checking out the wide range of styles and colors of hair feathers is online. An amazing array of colors and lengths are available. Some stylists say that younger women generally opt for the brighter colors, and older women will usually go with the neutral colors. The standard black and white striped pattern is called grizzly, and has been one of the more popular styles. Colorfast dyes are used on some of the feathers to create a wide spectrum of colors to choose from. There are also some sythetic feathers that are available for you to choose from as well.

How much do hair feathers cost? The price of hair feathers is as varied as the colors and styles. Prices range from $5 to $50, depending on what you are looking for and how well you shop. By window-shopping online first, you can get a clearer picture of the look you are after, and a price range that suits you.
