Burglaries are on the rise, and the news reports each day of people being attacked, robbed, and even killed in their houses. The prudent person will install a protection system in his house to protect himself and his family. There are different types of alarm systems, the silent alarm and the alarm that sound a loud ring or wail when activated. Some people like to have both a silent alarm and an alarm that sounds a loud wail to scare off intruders. Most intruders operate under the cloak of darkness and silence, so when a loud alarm is activated, in many instances they will flee. Some people think that their family dog is all the alarm system needed in their house, but these people should rethink this idea. Dogs can be easily distracted by a large steak, and if the meat is filled with tranquilizers, the dog will be useless. Some people believe that having a firearm is better than an alarm system, but this is untrue. It is the rare person who can awaken, in the dark, from a sound sleep, and start using a firearm safely and effectively, so a firearm is not the right protection. The alarm system can be activated to monitor activity around the property twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. Choose a system that runs off a different circuit from the main electrical power so that a savvy burglar will not cut the power and disable the system. Choose a service company that is manned by professional personnel, trained in emergency response. Some companies sell protection systems in one state but monitor activity from another state. Choose a system with a monitoring station locally and not in another region or state. If possible, visit the monitoring station and ask for a tour of the facility. When the protection service alarm is activated, the personnel in the monitoring station will receive a distress signal. The guard will follow the procedures outlined in the service company's response manual. There are various responses that company guards take, including calling the police. Some companies in addition to alerting police send an armed response to the home, that is, the company's guards are licensed to carry firearms. When the alarm is activated, someone from the service will call the phone number listed on the account. The person answering the phone will be asked to give the password. Each client is asked to provide a password that will be used in case of a false alarm. It is important not to share this password with anyone outside the family.
