Construct Your Own Wind Turbine Or Not?

When you are considering whether or not to build your own wind turbine, there are a number of issues you need to contemplate. Not least of which is, what is your motivation for having a windmill in the first place?

There are so many options out there and so many new ones coming on the market almost every month. The renewable energy landscape is becoming more and more confusing and the more choices we have the more there is to evaluate.

Nevertheless, there are a number of great options out there for making your own turbine. Plans are available online for under $100 that will allow you to make your own version of a windmill that will pay for itself quickly and over and over again, year after year.

If you fit into one of these categories you probably are a good candidate to make one of these devices yourself:

A person who does a lot of do-it-yourself projects around the house now - you won't be intimidated or frustrated by the time it takes to scavenge the materialsFolks who just want or need to understand the science behind the things they own - making a windmill yourself allows you delve into what really makes them workSomeone who is just ready to dive into being more green and dealing with the carbon footprint they are leaving on this earth You certainly have to be patient to complete a project like this. There can be frustrations and time delays when working to build anything from a kit. You are having to trust the accuracy of the person who developed it when you purchase the materials.

The blades are probably the most complicated part if you are going to try to make the windmill 100% yourself. You can easily hedge a bit by ordering pre-made blades made of polycarbonate or metal and that will save a lot of time and possible frustration.

Also, the blades are the biggest item to wear out and need replacement because they are subject to the most abuse over time. So, by just buying this part of the assembly you will be considerably speeding up the process of getting yourself up and running (and making electricity).

In conclusion, if you fall into any one of these categories of people, to build your own wind turbine will be a fun project that will continue to pay off years in the future. This is truly an investment of your time with little downside.
