One of the most important aspects of a business is choosing the domain names. After all, you want people to be able to find you quickly and easily. Catchy titles that are easy to type and remember are among the most profitable, regardless of the type of industry they represent. Domain registration should ideally be the name of the business. For example, if the business is called Pets Unlimited, then the most suitable URL would be petsunlimited.com. If that is already taken, you have a couple of choices: Change the name of the business, or choose another URL. Usually, choosing another URL is much more efficient. A second thing to keep in mind is the length of the domain names. Keeping it short may be better, as it is easier to type and remember for customers. However, it should not be so short that it has no meaning. A URL such as budgetworksheets.com is usually better than monthlyandyearlybudgetworksheetsforthewholefamily.com. Hyphens have long been a source of frustration and confusion when it comes to domain names. Many people are more comfortable with typing in one long word, instead of using hyphens. Consider the ease of typing booksforsale.com rather than books-for-sale.com. Try to make it as simple for the customers as possible. Spelling is crucial when you are deciding on your domain names. If the business name consists of a word that is often misspelled (think theatre/theater, center/centre, practice/practise, etc.) you may be missing out on potential customers if they spell a word one way, and you spell it another in the URL. The solution to this is to register both domains and have one redirected to your main site. Extensions are also an important consideration. While the . Com extension is certainly the most popular and is widely used, there are others that are equally suitable, such as . Biz, . Net and . Org. Be sure to advertise and market your site with the full extension so people will not assume a . Com extension and visit the wrong site. You may be giving business to your competition, which means less money in your pocket. Domain names are a direct reflection of the type of business you have and the selection of services and products you provide. The person typing in the URL into the search engine needs to understand its meaning. If your URL is dailycalendars.com and you only sell magazines, you are completely misleading your visitors with inappropriate naming. That could also get you into some trouble with online watchdog groups or even the BBB. There is much to consider when choosing domain names that reflect your business. The URL should be the same as your business name, but this is not always possible. The use of hyphens, spelling, length and extensions also need to be considered. A proper, catchy domain name is a critical factor in the success of your online venture. Once chosen, it is difficult to change so think long and hard before making your final decision. You do not have to use the first name you come up with.
