Wind Generator Kits - Could Your Roof Work?

By : Roger Brown

If you are looking into wind turbine kits to make power at your home, where should you place them to make the most electricity you can?

Although we all want to help the planet by not burning so much fossil fuel, (which forces so much carbon up into the atmosphere), the biggest goal for most of us in installing renewable energy at home is to save money. That savings is directly dependent on where you end up mounting the device.

There are several choices for most people to consider and here are the basic differences in them:

* Roof mount - the wind on the roof is by far the most turbulent. That is not really a problem though. Vertical axis wind turbines are very adept at handling chaotic wind conditions. Because they do not have a tail assembly to hunt and seek the predominant wind, they can take advantage of winds that come from any direction. Vertical wind turbines are not, however, as efficient as other types of wind turbines. Your roof can be a terrific source of wind in any case. There is a lot of wind up there. You just need to have the right wind device to take advantage of it. You also need to put it up in just the right place. The wind is not the same all over your roof. For example at the eve, the speed of the wind can be up to a factor of three times what it was when it began its trek up your roofline.

* Tower mount - installing your wind device on top of a tower is by far the most efficient way to produce wind energy. The reason for that is the same reason that the vertical wind turbine is not very efficient. What I mean by that is the horizontal wind devices that are typically mounted on top of towers, are very efficient. They are constantly looking for the predominant and therefore, strongest wind. They efficiencies range upwards of 55%. Whereas, the efficiency that you can optimally get out of a vertical axis device is 35%. Keep in mind, the wind flows in different patterns around your property and you have to adapt the choice of your turbine kit to that local environment. Even though theoretically, you want to strive for the most wind energy you can, it can be prohibitively expensive to get all you can out of the wind on your property.

Where you put your wind device may end up having more to do with your local community and the rules they may impose on location. Some communities are very open to the idea and some have highly restrictive permitting requirements that govern where you can install wind turbine kits of any type.

In the final analysis, you need to weigh the options and install wind turbine kits in the optimal location for your specific situation. Those solutions differ greatly from property to property and your solution will not be my solution. You cannot afford to take shortcuts here - You simply avoid the time consuming step of analyzing all of your likely opportunities before you set out and try to buy a device.
