Most everyone is familiar with the way home wind turbine kit works, but for the sake of clarity I would like to give a quick overview. Normally, these devices look a lot like the old Dutch windmill - which is another name for the horizontal axis wind turbine, and as a matter fact, has exactly the same configuration. A large rotor system bites the wind and turns a turbine shaft inside the home wind turbine kit that generates electricity inside a motor. Electricity is transferred via wiring to a load of some kind. That load can either be a direct use, like your house or some subcomponent within your house, like a refrigerator. They can also be directed to a set of batteries that you can use for backup power in case you utility fails to do its job and supply you power when you need it. The biggest consideration when you're looking into wind devices is do you have enough wind to actually get the job done. The higher up you can locate your turbine in the atmosphere the better off you are, because that's where the strongest and most consistent wind is. If you go at least 30 feet above the height of the highest obstacle - that is, trees and buildings - you will find your strongest and most consistent wind. As you might imagine, areas on the coast can be ideal for wind power generation. Also, states in the center of the country, like Colorado and Texas can be very strong contenders as well. That's where you find the most wind farms as a matter fact. Utilities in the states build their own power generation from wind and charged giant sets of batteries that can be used to disperse energy later. While it's possible to have all of your electricity needs supplied by one when device, it is a lot more common to use the power you make from such device to power some small appliance or provide battery backup for some critical item like a freezer. Charging a set of batteries is by far the biggest application for wind turbine technology at present. The larger the set of batteries the better, because the type of batteries that you use with a when device are lead acid, which notoriously take up a lot of space, but are almost infinitely rechargeable. The only real negatives these days are the high cost of obtaining a home wind turbine kit and the complaints that the neighbors lodge against the noise and unsightliness of the larger ones as they spot the landscape. As power costs continue to rise, those complaints will likely whither and fade away.
