With watch altimeters you can get a boatload of information in a very tiny space. They have at their disposal a ton of data that you can use to make your trip in the outdoors a lot more fun and informative. For people that spend a lot of time outside away from civilization, it is almost essential to have that information in order to maintain an adequate level of safety. It is just not safe to be out in the woods where you're vulnerable with no instrument to be able to predict inclement weather that may be approaching. With this type of watch, that has both temperature and barometric pressure and altimeter information, you are in the best possible position for being able to predict things that will influence your safety. Here are the important functions that most watch altimeters also have: * Temperature * Compass * Barometric pressure You can also find altimeter watches that have tidal charts and weather predicting capability. The way they predict whether it is by a combination of temperature and changes in barometric pressure. When you get a wrist watch like this you are going to pay a good bit more than your standard garden variety watch. Because of the availability of all this information, you will be pleased with the net result of owning it though. To take full advantage of a watch like this you have to study its functions carefully and practice with them some. The way to do that is to first read the manual. That is not something most of us do any more. Some devices don't even come with manuals nowadays. You have to take some time though and et comfortable with the various functions on a watch like this. The more expensive a watch with altimeter you buy, the easier and usually that less complicated the readout. The less expensive watches are usually the more complicated and require you to be more intuitive in figuring out exactly what they mean. But, if you get a higher end altimeter watch the altimeter readout and the temperature and even the predictive weather capability will be very simple to interpret. Watch altimeters will all come in very handy if you are in the woods a lot. Just having access to temperature is a very valuable feature. Keep in mind you may not be a location where the Internet is available. We are so used to being able to get information that way. Especially when the Internet's not available it is nice to have accurate readings on your watch.
