Does Your Business Actually Need A Top Level Domain?

Setting up your business' website means selecting just the right domain name. The top level domain(TLD) will be part of any website name you select. While you can customize your domain names, the list of available TLDs is fixed. You can find a site name's TLD at its very end, after the final period. When you have the YourTerrificWebsite.com domain name, ". Com" is the TLD.

Each and every domain name you buy for your website will have a TLD attached to it. However, you can select one (or a variety) that makes the most strategic sense for your business. Since you can have multiple domain names pointing to your single site, you may decide it's advantageous for you to buy the same website name with every ending that makes sense.

The most popular one used in domain names is COM. One of the first ones set up, COM (as in "commercial") was initially intended to be used by business. However, it is used by any kind of site. So it doesn't necessarily establish your site as a business. Even so, because it is the default TLD most users assume a site will have, it is usually a valuable selection.

Since COM isn't considered necessarily for only businesses, a newer TLD has been added to take that role. The BIZ (business) choice is supposed to be for the exclusive use of businesses. It is not as well known as the COM option. As a result, it's most often bought only if your desired website name already exists with a COM on somebody else's site.

There have also been some recent selections that designate specific industries. A few examples of this type are AERO (for the aeronautics industry), TRAVEL, or PRO (available for certain professions). If your business is part of an industry that has its own TLD, that could be a valuable addition to your list of domain names.

If the location of your business is relevant, then you might want to add a version of your website name with the appropriate country code ending(ccTLD). For example, if your business is in Australia you might want people to know that. In this case, you can buy a site name with the AU ccTLD.

There are especially interesting marketing options are available to a few lucky industries due to some particular country code abbreviations. For example, television related businesses might want to buy a website name with the geographic code for the country Tuvalu, as its TV. Radio stations can also grab an FM ending if the buy a domain name from the Federated States of Micronesia.

If the COM is available to you with the specific website name you want, it will likely be the one you decide to buy. However, it can also be useful to buy your domain names with as many relevant options you can. This makes it more likely that someone who knows your specific website name will still find your business online regardless of which one they assume you have on it.
