A roof anchor system is designed to support both equipment and employees when they are in a work environment that is high above the ground. There are thousands of injuries every year because the proper safety equipment is not in place or working properly. Regardless of the situation, the system should be in good working order and used by each employee to prevent unnecessary injury or death. The various types of roof anchors, lanyards, connectors, harnesses, and wires are designed for specific purposes. Laws and safety regulations often require specific types of equipment depending on the job. The reason for these laws is to ensure that everyone is able to perform their job without worry about getting hurt. Roof anchors are made in many different styles. There are permanent and temporary styles. The permanent are often included during construction. The temporary equipment is often brought in during special jobs. There are also devices that are even designed to work with angled rooftops. Body harnesses are the most common type used in industrial applications. These help to spread the shock of a sudden stop through the torso. Older versions often resulted in the worker flailing helplessly because they were only attached at the midsection. The material and the hooks should be inspected for any wear, loose threads, or rust before use. Harnesses are often made from nylon mesh material with special stitching to be sure they do not break under extreme stress. They should be stored in a dry place to make sure they do not weaken. Shock absorbing lanyards prevent back injuries. These are made to slow a fall rather than creating a sudden stop. Many regulations call for them to be able to slow the fall by a number of feet. This will still cause a rather quick stop but has a much safer result than a simple wire would cause. When a worker falls, a sudden stop can cause serious injury. Inspecting the equipment before and after every use will save lives. If equipment is beginning to fail, it will typically show signs of wear, separation, or rusting. Since the equipment is made to use in extremely dangerous situations it is critical to be certain all parts are in excellent working condition. If there is a safety concern, the device should be replaced or properly repaired and tested prior to use. Roof anchor systems save lives. The proper inspection and use is needed for every job that poses a threat to workers and those around them. When working with window washing equipment, it is important to be sure to protect those that may be walking below by making sure that tools are also properly secured. Lives can be saved every year when the right precautions are taken.
