They are like an automobile battery in that regard. The batteries that you choose for home wind systems need to be deep cycle batteries. They need to be recharged over and over again and it shouldn't really matter how deeply they discharged before. They shouldn't have a memory, in other words. Every time those blades are turning you are making electricity and that electricity needs to be either used or stored. Having a good battery backup system is just prudent if you're going to engage in renewable energy production.
